Coiled follows Essence, a Black actress preparing for a major award night whose plans begin to unravel when her wig refuses to cooperate. As frustration builds, she is forced to confront the beauty standards and expectations that have shaped how she sees herself. Through memories, reflection, and images of Black women who came before her, Essence makes a powerful choice to embrace her natural hair. By the time she steps onto the red carpet, she is no longer simply preparing to receive an award she is stepping fully into herself.
